A Mission-Critical Healthcare Technology Platform
Be Data Solutions was engaged by a UK-based health technology company building live operational intelligence software for NHS hospital trusts.
The client has developed a real-time hospital operations platform that sits alongside existing Electronic Patient Records (EPR) systems — providing clinical and operational leaders with live visibility across bed management, patient flow, ward activity, and capacity pressures.
Co-designed directly with NHS teams — including nurses, matrons, site managers, and executives — the platform transforms raw hospital data into clear, timely operational insight, enabling hospitals to run safely and efficiently even under intense pressure. It is deployed across NHS Trust sites across the UK.
As the product matured and client demand grew, the business needed to accelerate platform development and strengthen its delivery processes — without the delay and overhead of building out a full in-house team.
Where Specialist Talent Was Needed
The client needed to move quickly — strengthening engineering output, quality assurance, and delivery management simultaneously.
PHP Engineering Capacity
Senior and mid-level PHP development resource was needed to maintain and extend a complex, data-intensive healthcare platform serving live NHS environments.
Software Quality Assurance
In a safety-critical healthcare setting, a dedicated Senior SQA Engineer was essential to enforce testing rigour and protect platform reliability.
Requirements & Analysis
A Business Analyst was required to bridge clinical stakeholders and engineering teams — translating complex NHS operational needs into clear technical requirements.
Structured Delivery Management
A Project Manager was needed to bring structure, governance, and accountability to delivery — keeping roadmap priorities on track across multiple workstreams.
Six Specialists. Five Roles.
Be Data Solutions provided a compact, high-impact team spanning engineering, quality assurance, analysis, and project delivery.
- Architected and maintained core PHP back-end services powering real-time hospital data processing and dashboard logic.
- Led technical decision-making for scalable, secure, and maintainable service design across a safety-critical platform.
- Implemented integrations with NHS PAS, EPR, and third-party clinical data sources via RESTful APIs.
- Conducted code reviews, enforced coding standards, and mentored mid-level developers within the team.
- Optimised database queries, caching strategies, and system performance for high-availability hospital environments.
- Developed and maintained PHP modules for bed management, patient flow tracking, and operational dashboard features.
- Built and maintained internal APIs, database schemas, and backend logic supporting live NHS Trust deployments.
- Implemented bug fixes, performance improvements, and feature enhancements across sprint cycles.
- Collaborated with the Senior PHP Developer, SQA team, and Business Analyst on requirement implementation and quality delivery.
- Participated in agile ceremonies including sprint planning, stand-ups, and retrospectives.
- Designed and maintained comprehensive test strategies for a live, safety-critical NHS hospital operations platform.
- Executed functional, regression, integration, and performance testing across all platform releases.
- Built and maintained automated test suites to accelerate release cycles and reduce manual testing overhead.
- Collaborated with developers to triage defects, define acceptance criteria, and enforce quality gates before deployment.
- Documented test plans, results, and quality reports for internal governance and NHS Trust stakeholder assurance.
- Gathered and translated complex NHS operational requirements from clinical and executive stakeholders into actionable technical specifications.
- Produced detailed user stories, process maps, and functional requirement documents aligned to sprint delivery.
- Bridged communication between hospital trust clients, product owners, and engineering teams to reduce ambiguity and rework.
- Supported UAT planning, facilitated stakeholder walkthroughs, and captured and tracked change requests through the delivery lifecycle.
- Analysed operational data and workflow inefficiencies to identify product improvement opportunities.
- Owned end-to-end delivery planning, milestone tracking, and stakeholder reporting across concurrent product workstreams.
- Facilitated agile ceremonies and maintained team velocity, sprint health, and backlog prioritisation in coordination with product leadership.
- Managed risks, issues, and dependencies — escalating blockers proactively to protect delivery timelines.
- Maintained clear communication cadence with NHS Trust clients, managing expectations and ensuring alignment on scope and progress.
- Produced governance documentation, delivery status reports, and project artefacts in line with client and internal requirements.
How We Worked Together
All resources operated as genuine extensions of the client's team — embedded in tooling, processes, and culture from day one.
Fully Embedded Delivery
Engineers, QA, BA, and PM were integrated into the client's existing agile delivery framework — sprint planning, stand-ups, retros, and all.
UK Time Zone Aligned
Remote-first delivery was structured around UK working hours, enabling real-time collaboration with the client's core team and NHS Trust stakeholders.
Safety-First Quality Standards
Given the NHS context, all delivery adhered to strict quality gates — with SQA embedded across every release cycle to protect platform reliability.
Flexible & Scalable
Resources operated on flexible terms, enabling the client to adjust capacity in line with roadmap demands and NHS Trust onboarding timelines.
Measurable Value, Delivered
The engagement accelerated delivery, strengthened quality, and freed the client's leadership to focus on growing NHS client relationships.
Faster Feature Delivery
Engineering capacity unlocked concurrent workstreams, compressing time-to-market for critical NHS platform features.
Stronger Quality Assurance
Dedicated SQA engineering reduced defect leakage and enforced release quality standards across a safety-critical clinical platform.
Clearer Requirements
Business Analysis capability reduced ambiguity between NHS stakeholders and engineering, cutting rework and improving sprint predictability.
Cost Efficiency
Senior and specialist talent accessed at a fraction of equivalent UK permanent hiring cost, with no recruitment overhead.
Structured Delivery
Project management brought governance and visibility to multi-track delivery, keeping NHS milestones on schedule.
Rapid Onboarding
Resources were embedded and productive within compressed timescales, bypassing the delays of conventional hiring.
Sustained Oversight
Be Data Solutions provided continuous performance oversight throughout the engagement, maintaining delivery quality.
